Hair Health 101: Tips for Stronger, Shinier Hair from InStyle Salon

Great color and cuts start with healthy hair. At InStyle Salon in Johns Creek, we see the difference that a few simple habits can make — less breakage, more shine, and color that lasts longer. Here’s our guide to keeping your hair in top shape.
Protect Your Hair From Heat
Heat styling is one of the biggest culprits when it comes to dryness and damage. Always use a heat protectant spray or serum before blow-drying, flat-ironing, or curling. When you can, let your hair air-dry partway before hitting it with the blow-dryer, and avoid the highest heat settings. Your future self will thank you.
Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner
If you have color-treated or keratin-treated hair, use sulfate-free or color-safe formulas. They’re gentler on the cuticle and help your color and treatments last longer. For oily roots and dry ends, try washing the roots and conditioning mainly from the mid-lengths down. And don’t skip conditioner — it helps seal the cuticle and reduce frizz.
Trim Regularly (Yes, Really)
Trims don’t make your hair grow faster, but they remove split ends before they travel up the strand and cause breakage. We recommend a trim every 8–12 weeks, or more often if you heat-style frequently. A small trim now can prevent the need for a big chop later.
Be Gentle When Wet
Hair is most fragile when it’s wet. Avoid rough towel-drying — blot or wrap in a microfiber towel instead. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush from the ends up, and try to avoid brushing when soaking wet if your hair is prone to breakage.
Protect From Sun and Chlorine
UV exposure and chlorine can dry out and dull your hair, especially if it’s color-treated. Wear a hat or use a leave-in with UV filters when you’re in the sun, and rinse your hair with fresh water before and after swimming to limit chlorine absorption.
Nourish From the Inside
A balanced diet with enough protein, iron, and vitamins (like biotin and vitamin D) supports healthy hair growth. Staying hydrated helps too. If you’re concerned about thinning or brittle hair, it’s worth talking to your doctor — sometimes diet or health changes can make a big difference.
